The Media Commission is one of the Commissions established by the NCWO. It was established with the following objectives.

OBJECTIVES

  To advocate for gender awareness and gender sensitization of the Malaysian. population through media programmes.
 

To advocate for a stronger presence of the women's voice in media programmes as well as the diversity of her role and contributions tosociety

  To advocate for greater involvement of women in the decision- making in the. The Malaysian media.
  To advocate for more effective development programmes for women
  To eliminate negative and gender bias images of women in the media

ACTIVITIES OF THE MEDIA COMMISSION, NCWO

Several programmes and activities have been held and are being arranged to achieve the objectives above.

Some of these activities include the following :

  Participation in policy- making meetings and activities of NCWO.
  Organising and conducting gender- sensitization workshops for journalists . Effective Reporting on Women and Women's Issues in the Print Media.
    a) Held in Kuala Lumpur, 23-24 March 2000 at Ming Court Hotel.
40 participants from the Malaysian media - newspapers, magazines,
universities and Information Department.

b) Held in Kota Kinabalu, 30-31 October 2000.
15 journalists participated.

c) Held in Kuching, Sarawak, 15- 16 February 2001
25 journalists and academics participated.

 

Organised and conducted a one day " Media Skills Workshop for Women NGOs"
29th September 2001, Cooperative College, Petaling Jaya.
With 60 participants.

  Represent NCWO on National Committees
  a) "Consumer Forum of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia"
(Forum Pengguna Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia)

b) " Content Forum of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia"
(Forum Kandungan Kommunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia)As Council Member, April 2001- April 2003

Both involve participation in drawing up self-regulatory codes for the . Communication Multimedia Industry.
